Furniture does not have to be expensive to build. In this tutorial blog I will show you how to build this beautiful table for under 40 dollars out of 2×6’s and 2×4’s. So lets start this build.
Begin by cutting all your 2×4’s and 2×6’s to size for all the pieces needed. For sizes and cut list please see my plans via my store. http://rhwoodshop.com/store/#!/X-Brace-Sofa-Table-Plan/p/86398706/category=23790308
Label them so you don’t confuse them as you cut.
Using a feather board and proper push blocks to run pieces through proves to be much safer.
Glue up the 2×6’s together to form the top and shelf.
Alternate the grain pattern to prevent warping or cupping.
Using a dado stack, plow out a dado in the 2×4 legs 4” up from one end. This dado will accept a 2×4 bottom cross member.
Also cut a rabbet on the other end of the legs which will accept the top stretcher and now the leg frame is complete.
Now the shelf needs to attach to the bottom stretcher the leg and the best way is to use pocket screws.
Just do a little prep sanding to make the assembly easier.
Now just attach the shelf to the bottom stretcher of one of the legs with pocket screws.
The top front and back stretchers also have rabbets cut on either end which will fill in the rabbet of the legs. Attach them with clamps and glue.
Using a miter gauge cut the desired angles of the back cross braces, they can be fit in place.
Now to make the X Brace for the legs. Cut angles on either end and dados in the middle of each member where they meet using a miter gauge.
Now glue them together and install them in the leg frames.
Lastly, attach the top to the stretchers to complete the construction.
Finished it with stain and poly and brand it.
Now take some pics to admire it.
